EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

Comprehensive Theatre Arts Education
Stage One is committed to providing comprehensive theatre arts education for all students in Kentuckiana. The comprehensive approach to theatre arts education is a three-pronged approach: the arts experience, the arts process, and the arts instruction. In order to make drama and theatre a regular and normal part of student’s daily learning, students need to understand and have access to all three of these components.

ARTS EXPERIENCE

Arts instruction includes skills training and drama core content instruction for addressing Kentucky’s Arts and Humanities program of studies and Indiana’s State Standards. These workshops are designed to introduce students to the creative and collaborative process of theatre, focusing on the four main roles involved in creating and performing theatre, playwriting, acting, directing and production design. Students develop assessment readiness through performance-oriented tasks and open response questions.

ARTS PROCESS

The arts process provides a wide range of learning opportunities, from creative dramatics and performance skills to integrated curriculum applications. Through this work, students gain hands on experience with the elements of drama as outlined in Kentucky’s core content and Indiana’s standards. It has been proven that the use of drama as a means to teach core curriculum subject matter has greatly enhanced test scores, student confidence, teacher awareness and overall enjoyment of learning. The arts process also allows Stage One educators to work collaboratively with teachers to create lesson plans with objectives that cover not only drama core content, but also the core content of the selected subject matter.

ARTS INSTRUCTION

Arts instruction includes skills training in drama, helping students & teachers learn how to create and perform in the classroom. Stage One is committed to helping students develop drama readiness through participatory, hands-on workshop activities that are based directly on Kentucky’s Arts and Humanities Program of Studies and Core Content in Drama, as well as Indiana’s state standards
